Brewing the Bike: Chatham Rev 2

An easy cruise down the beach

Chatham Rev 2 is the next step in the evolution of our inaugural electric beach cruiser. The formula was simple; keep the good and improve on the rest.

Comfort First

Beach Cruisers are built for cruising around, enjoying the breeze, and taking in views. To maximize the cruise, we focused on increasing the comfort of Chatham Rev 2. For starters, a nice, soft, padded saddle is mandatory. We paired this with a set of comfort grips that lock onto the handlebars to prevent twisting, as well as large platform pedals that have a less aggressive tread to them but still offer superior grip.

Finally, bumpy, chattery rides are no more thanks to 3-inch wide balloon tires that exceed our top competitors by more than half an inch of width. This added volume creates a larger cushion and allows for lower tire pressures to be used.

A little bigger in a whole new location

This next generation beach cruiser has done away with the rear carrier mounted battery in favor of placement behind the seat tube. The end result is a cleaner look that is also easier to handle due to the weight of the battery being lower and more centered on the frame.

Shifting focus to the power of the bike, we were able to increase the watt hours to 360 thanks to this change. That means you can ride using the 350W motor for longer than its predecessors.

Less is More

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best solution. This way of thinking helped us decide on several of the parts for Chatham Rev 2. Starting with the LED display, the large, center-mounted screen was shunned in favor of this simpler display for simple operation and allowing the rider to drink in the surrounding scenery rather than a screen full of data. The 5 levels of assist and battery charge information are still readily available for quick reference, but are definitely a side show.

Same goes for the gears. On tap are the classic Shimano 7 speeds, but this time with a larger Mega-Range 34T large gear just in case you do choose to cruise uphill.

Then Again, Sometimes More is More

Especially when it comes to stopping. With the addition of larger tires, we also went with a larger 180mm rotor and upgraded brake pads. This change gives the new generation of Retrospec beach next level stopping power.

The bike is also more customizable. With more places to mount accessories to your Chatham Rev 2, you can deck out your e-bike however you choose. Fenders, rear rack, front basket, and more can all be accommodated with new mounting points set around the frame.

It’s the Little Things

To improve on all aspects, Chatham Rev 2 comes with a handy little multi-tool that has everything you need and can fit in your pocket. Not only does it offer all the wrenches needed to assemble your new bike, its folding design and compact shape make it easy to take along just in case the need should arise while cruising around.
